We have always had both cats and dogs but cats are easier to maintain as they are independent As long as you feed them regularly they will stay with you.

I like cats as well as dogs. I have a Bengal cat as a pet. My pet dog is a Tibetan Apso. However, I am more of a cat person. I am wild at heart, wild at mind, and sometimes wild in my behavior. Dogs are timid and reticent animals but cats are wild in nature. It is believed cats and dogs evolved at the same time, around 4.5 million years ago.

I prefer cats because they are less maintenance than dogs, you don't even have to bathe them and they also eat less than dogs, and are quiet and behaved most of the time. With dogs, you still need to walk them or at least give them some exercise plus the bigger the dog, the more food it consumes.
